About Amarnath Cave

Located at an altitude of approximately 3,888 meters, the Amarnath Cave is surrounded by snow-clad mountains and untouched natural beauty. According to Hindu mythology, this is the sacred place where Lord Shiva revealed the Amar Katha (the secret of immortality) to Goddess Parvati. The Ice Shivling, formed naturally by freezing water drops, is considered a divine miracle and the main attraction of the yatra.

How to Reach & Routes

The nearest airport to Amarnath is Srinagar, from where pilgrims travel by road to the base camps. There are two main trekking routes:

  • Pahalgam Route – Longer but scenic and traditional, suitable for most pilgrims

  • Baltal Route – Shorter but steep, recommended for physically fit yatris

For convenience, helicopter services are also available from both routes up to Panchtarni, followed by a short trek to the holy cave.

Best Time & Registration

The Amarnath Yatra is conducted only during July and August, depending on weather conditions. Advance registration and medical fitness certification are mandatory for all pilgrims to ensure safety during the yatra.
